Mantua’s most famous sons are the poet Virgil, whose statue you can see in a niche on Palazzo Broletto, and Andrea Mantegna, who was court painter to the Gonzagas and produced the famous Camera degli Sposi in the Palazzo Ducale.

Basilica di Sant’Andrea

Situated on the neighbouring Piazza Mantegna, the Basilica di Sant’Andrea (daily 8am–noon, 3–7pm) was a major landmark in Renaissance architecture. Replacing a Romanesque church, it was designed by the great Florentine architect and theorist Leon Battista Alberti for Lodovico Il Gonzaga. Inspired by classical architecture and evoking the grandeur of ancient Rome, the basilica combines a temple front and triumphal arch. The imposing interior is laid out on a Roman basilica plan and profusely decorated. The first chapel on the left houses the tomb of the painter, Andrea Mantegna, who died in Mantua in 1506.
